Is Ultron too good of a Villain?

The new movie Avengers: Age of Ultron hit all theaters on May 1st and has already made close to $200 million in box office. The movie is originally based on the famous Marvel comic books, and although ratings remain at a high four stars, many comics book fans found themselves disappointed by the portrayal of the characters. Viewers highlighted their problems with the main villain, Ultron. Highly trusted review websites have blatantly called Ultron a "really terrible villain" claiming that "he's a 'villain of the week' at best, and not even a very good one" (Kain). Ultron's character was presented to be a creation of Tony Stark and to have his same sarcastically humorous qualities. Fans reacted by voicing their opinions that the villain didn't do enough. Although viewers came to the theater knowing that the Earth's Mightiest Heroes always win, not at any point in the movie were the fans on the edge of their seat anticipating the possibilities of their downfall. Overall, the fans' expectations were not met because Ultron's character did not reach its full potential.

On the other hand, interviews with the writer and director of the movie, Joss Whedon, revealed after the release that he is pleased with the representation of his villain. Whedon's goal was to humanize Ultron's robot character, and it's ironic that the "too human" qualities of the villain's character is what has failed to appeal to the viewers. Nonetheless, the other intentions of Whedon were met. A unique villain was created and the movie has thrived, already passing the lifetime earnings of Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, and Iron Man 2. Even if the fans disagree with some representations, Marvel has life-long fans that are still looking forward to the next movie.
